Bandits win South SEABL Conference Final!![]() Bandits win South SEABL Conference Final!hat a night for Bandits fans! A capacity crowd at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre watched anxiously as the Bandits started out of the blocks slowly, struggling to make an early shot, and at the 6-minute mark of the first quarter they were looking down the barrel with the scores at 16-4. The Bandits kept working hard and a Jazz Ferguson 3 pointer on the buzzer saw Knox’s lead narrowed to just 3, with the scores sitting at 23-20 at the first break.
The Bandits started to find their rhythm early in the second quarter and at the 5-minute mark, they hit the lead with a 2-point shot from Momo, a lead which they never surrendered. Up at the long break by 4 pts, Momo had already stamped his mark on the game sending a clear message to Raiders big man Lester Strong that he meant business. Ex Bandit Mick Hill battled gallantly all game leading Knox’s scorers with 26 pts and 3 rebs. A great defensive effort by the Bandits saw the Knox import duo held to 18 pts between them. A sensational game by Momo Ntumba with 22 pts and a massive 17 rebs, Jazz with 23 pts, 7 reb 4 assists and Captain Nick Payne, with 15 pts 10 reb saw the Bandits eventual winners 77-69. The Bandits now play the Dandenong Rangers in the National Final at the State Basketball Centre in Melbourne looking to go one better than 2001 for the title of national champions. Nick Payne now becomes one of the most decorated players in the League having won 2 championships with Knox Raiders and 2 with the Bandits. |

Farewell Favourite Local Player, Alex DuckThe Albury-Wodonga Commercial Club Bandits today announced with great sadness that star local player Alex Duck will be leaving The Hideout next year and won’t be suiting up for the Lady Bandits in the 2013 SEABL Season. Alex had intended on leaving Albury next year but was coincidentally approached by the Geelong Supercats to join their squad, an opportunity she decided to take.
“I had decided a few weeks ago that I needed a change in my life and was intending to move away from Albury next year. The coach of the Geelong Supercats rang me recently and offered me a contract to play and work in Geelong and, after careful consideration, I’ve decided to accept the offer”, Alex Duck said today. “I am sad to be leaving my team and the club but feel it is the right move at this stage in my life. I wish the Bandits and the Lady Bandits all the best in the coming season and I look forward to catching up with everyone when I come back to play”. President of the Bandits Paul Gooding said the Club would be very reluctant to see Alex leave the Border, as she has been an important member of the Lady Bandits for several years. “Alex has been a great local product of Albury Basketball, playing all her junior and representative basketball with the Albury Cougars”, he said. Alex, or Ducky as she is affectionately known, commenced her career in 2007. She has played over 100 games for the Lady Bandits averaging 14.1 ppg, 5.5 reb, 3.3 ass and 2.6 steals. This year Ducky also managed to make the top ten in the League in two categories – coming 3rd overall in steals and 5th in Free Throws. Alex won the Club MVP in 2008 and 2012, and won the SEABL Women’s Australian Youth Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009, under Coach Al McCowan and Kennedy Kereama in 2009. After spending a year at Murray State University in the US in 2010, Ducky returned to Albury to play with the Lady Bandits, quickly becoming one of the leaders in the team. “She has been a tremendous role model for our up and coming young players, and plays her heart out every time she takes the court,” Gooding said. “There was no time more evident of this than when she won the inaugural Allen McCowan Memorial Award in the Al McCowan Tribute Game on 9 June, where she scored 39 pts against Nunawading. “We will really miss Ducky’s enthusiasm and passion and her happy nature around the Club but wish her all the best for the future. We know she will always be a true Bandit at heart”. 2 November 2012 |
